FOREST PATH

FOREST PATH
FOREST PATH

I've been a lifelong student of light and trees and woodlands, always drinking in the mystical magical aura that forested areas radiate.  This piece was done mainly from imagination and memory,  of no particular woodland path.  My goal was to show light filtering through fall trees, and I'm happy with the results.

Worked in Coloured Pencil,  this painting began as just a simple value sketch, showing a path with a few trees on either side of it.  It gradually evolved into what you see in the finished image,  through many layers of colour upon colour upon colour.  It was worked with blunt-ended pencils, a technique I've been experimenting with since the first of this year, and I'd say it's my most successful piece to date in this genre.

Sharon Hicks "Forest Path" is beautiful. I feel like I could walk right into it.

Thanks Marcia ... I love the challenge of creating depth in my paintings - that's where the 'magic' lies - it's an optical illusion which makes it seem you can 'walk into' a flat piece of paper. I think this is one of my best to date. :)
